Elijah Cup

A Devotional Aid To Pray For Vocations

The Elijah Cup

The Elijah Cup Program is a simple yet meaningful way for parish families to pray together and support vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

The Elijah Cup is a chalice - a sacred vessel used at Mass to hold the wine that becomes the Blood of Christ through the Eucharist. As a symbol of God's call to serve His Church, the cup is shared among parish families as a focal point for prayer.

Families are invited to welcome the Elijah Cup into their home for one week. During that time, the cup is placed in a prominent location, serving as a daily reminder to gather in prayer. Together, family members pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated religious life, while also praying for those whom God is calling to respond with generous and faithful hearts.

The strength of the Elijah Cup Program lies in its simplicity. It has two primary goals:

  • To pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

  • To strengthen family life by encouraging daily prayer together.

A vocation is a gift from God, nurtured through prayer and openness to His will. By praying for vocations, we ask the Lord to inspire men and women to hear His call and to respond with courage and faith. Through the Elijah Cup Program, our parish joins together in supporting the future of the Church - one family, one week, and one prayer at a time.

The Saint Agnes Elijah Cup

The Saint Agnes Elijah Cup was donated to the parish in November 2005 by the Knights of Columbus St. Jude Council #9019. In early 2006, parish families began taking the cup into their homes and using it as a focal point for family prayer, with intentions centered on vocations.

We hope that everyone who welcomes the Elijah Cup into their home for one week and participates in this meaningful ministry at Saint Agnes will continue praying daily for vocations long after their week has ended. We also hope these pages will inspire and encourage that ongoing prayer.

The story of the Elijah Cup does not end with these prayers. One day, it will be presented to the next young man from Saint Agnes who answers God's call to the priesthood.
